Synopsis
With summer comes the annual holiday for a group of East End families, including Laura, Jack and their daughter Kay, Bert and his wife Liz. In the Kent hop-fields the work is hard for the pickers, but gratifying, with lively social gatherings around camp fires. This summer though, things will change forever. Richard Wright, the landowner, has decided to mechanise his farm and everyone is affected - Laura, whose seasonal love affair with Richard is discovered by his wife; Kay, on the brink of womanhood and inflamed with love for a handsome gipsy lad, Zacchi, and the Londoners who discover that this is the last season they will be invited back to pick hops. Loyalties and family ties are strained and tested in this tale of illicit love and firm friendship. A novel that is rich in character and incident and ringing with authenticity. 'Unbridled passions run riot.' DAILY MAIL
